When They Lay Me Down

from Death, Thou Shalt Die by Jacob T. Skeen

/
  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

I can only describe it as a "Midnight Revival" that spans the bridge from the secular Saturday Night with its Devil's Music to the holy Sunday morning. It even comes with a hymn booklet with the lyrics of Jacob's testimony. For those unfamiliar, Skeen is a Salt Lake City one man band act. He was on his way to tour Italy before the Covid came down and destroyed his plans. Those who have seen him perform are probably familiar with his raw and loud sound. The album captures that but only more so. Far from a clean digital sound, the analogue recording has more in common with old punk records than most anything coming out today. If Jacob seeks to preach, it isn't in any holy temple. Like a true evangelical, he is bringing the good word directly to a sin filled underground of night clubs and juke joints. (John Whipple)

lyrics

Jesus call my name,
it’s a crying shame
Jesus call my name,
when they lay me down

Lay me down to rest,
in my Sunday best
Lay me down to rest,
when they lay me down

And when they lay me down to rest,
I’m gonna go to the, the place thats the best,

And when they lay me down to die,
My spirit will go up on high

Make my dying bed,
do not morn the dead,
Make my dying bed,
when they lay me down

Lay my burden down,
let the 1.trumpet sound,
Lay my burden down,
when they lay me down

And when I die call forth the priest,
and face my grave toward the 2.east

Upon my headstone write this Psalm,
The 3.righteous flourish like a palm.

(Selah)

In the cold hard ground,
where my bones are found,
In the cold hard ground,
When they lay me down

Sing a song of praise,
Let the dead be raised,
Sing a song of praise,
